Our next yurt building workshop will be offered January 20, 21, and 22nd 2012 in Santa Cruz California.

Sewing the yurt cover at our workshop…

We will be teaching people how to build all yurt parts. All participants will leave the workshop with knowledge about building their own yurt, the complete yurt building manual, and a good foundation for starting their own yurt project.

We will offer lots of tips and suggestions, and participants should leave the workshop with first hand experience and knowledge about how all yurt parts come together (including the yurt cover and all frame parts).

“I loved the hands-on options. Thanks for the background, so that personal modifications [to the yurts] can be made… I would recommend this workshop to others!”

We feel that because the roof ring is the most challenging frame piece to build, it will benefit all participants to make it on site. In the sewing studio, we teach how to make windows, assemble the walls, and cut and sew an entire roof! Some of the participants have helped with the sewing.

“I got to learn, then actually build many parts of the yurt in 1 day! I recommend this workshop to others!”

The cost for the workshop is $125 to help cover costs incurred by workshop (food, materials, instructors, printing of the manual, etc.) We will have a limit of 8-10 people at our workshop.

Below is an outline of what can be expected from the workshop. More detailed information will be available closer to the workshop, so check back in! And keep checking facebook! Thank you!

A participant builds her roof ring at the Laurel Nest Yurts building workshop

We had some other positive feedback, and testimonials, and they are below… thanks to everybody who made the workshop a success!

‎”I don’t know where I could find a better value in a sustainable shelter or a more helpful group of people to facilitate my dream of building my own yurt, then at Laurel Nest Yurts.”

“The workshop was awesome! people had a great time and learned a lot..no matter what level of know-how they came in with. There were people who already knew a lot, and people like me who were total beginners, and everyone was comfortable and got a chance to learn. Thanks Hal, Charlie, Asia and everyone for a great weekend!”

Workshops:

We offer two types of yurt building workshops. Our goal is to meet your needs and help you be involved in building your own yurt.

Workshop 1: Help Build Your Yurt! You pay the cost of the yurt, learn the steps of building the yurt, and work for 3 weekends on building yurt parts, set up a yurt, and when the building school is over you can take home your yurt or have it shipped to your home.

Workshop 2: Learn to Build Your Yurt Purchase book and use it as a tool during workshop as you learn to make all the different yurt parts, including the rafters, khana, door frame, You will assemble an entire yurt, put together khana, grommet a canvas, and put the yurt up . You will go home with a sample rafter, khana piece, a roof ring, and a canvas.

Speaking engagements: we want to educate people about yurts. We are happy to come to your area and host a class, workshop, or talk about yurts and yurt building. We can help you get started on building your own yurt, the possibilities are endless… let us know how we can help you!
