Many of our clients choose to build parts of their yurts, and have us send them certain parts. This makes their project more affordable and more sustainable. By making products yourself, you can cut costs on shipping (and hence be more sustainable) and also costs on our own labor and materials…

The Hoffmans ordered some parts from us and chose to build other parts themselves. We sent them the ring, the khana, un-assembled, and the yurt cover. They built their own rafters, door frame, and assembled their khana. They did all the staining and finishing themselves, and were able to save over $1,000. For the cover, they picked Starfire fabric and we ordered it in colors of their choice. The yurt is beautiful, and has their loving labor in each piece!

Kudos to the Hoffmans, and enjoy the slide show of their yurt-story…

Our glass window option utilizes a Low-E thermal glass window for maximum energy efficiency, and can be easily accessorized for a personalized look. The most tangible benefit of the glass windows is that they can be opened from inside. When we build the window frame, we eliminate the lattice that crisscrosses through the standard yurt window and give you a beautiful view open view through the window.

Real Windows can be added to your standard yurt package, or you can easily build them yourself...

The glass new window system can be installed virtually anywhere along the wall of any of our yurts, and can be ordered with a new yurt package or you can build one yourself, and add it to your own custom yurt project.

*For people with chemical sensitivities, glass windows offer a wonderful option for building a yurt with completely natural materials.

When I first decided to build a yurt a friend took me out to see Hal & Asia at Laurel Nest. Not only did Hal teach me to build my own yurt, he even hired me for a while and paid me to learn. While I’m sure he couldn’t do this with everybody (how would you make any $?) it gave me the chance to get to know Hal and Asia and their serious dedication to simple & healthy living. This yurt company isn’t just a business to them, it’s really more like a humanitarian mission to help other people live better, more artistically, with an independence that comes with having a beautiful & portable home (or yoga studio or whatever). They were there through the whole process and even 2 years later keep me up to speed on any new ideas or issues involved in yurt living. While this may all sound exaggerated or flowery, it’s actually true, it’s really how they are. If you want a yurt (and I think everyone should) you won’t find anybody better than Laurel Nest, yurts are their life. John McCabe

We would like to help people get into yurts. We try to stay affordable while still offering a beautifully crafted yurt. If you would like to lower the cost of your yurt still more, there are several options available.

Sanding and staining yurt frame parts You may choose to leave your khana and rafters unsanded and unstained; we still recommend making sure to complete this step before setting your yurt up.

Assembling your own khana walls We will send you the hardware needed, and you can put your walls together. This will save you both on shipping costs and on the total yurt cost.

Assembling your door frame We will send the parts, and you just put them together; you will also want to buy your door locally for this option.

Buying your own door locally, and modifying it to fit the custom door frame that we send with your complete kit

Making your own rafters We can send you a template and all the lumber needed to make your own rafters.

Painting your cover We recommend painting your cover to help it last longer using a primer coat and a Thermashield insulating paint.

Seam sealing the roof cover This step is completed much more easily when the cover is up.

We always encourage people to build their own yurt parts. Anytime you choose to build individual yurt parts you save money and are more involved in the building of your new round dwelling.
