Purchasing Individual Yurt Components

At Laurel Nest Yurts, we believe in helping people to build their own yurts.  If you are interested in building yurt components, we do sell individual yurt parts.

Component parts may be purchased in several ways.  You may choose to finish parts yourself– i.e. sand or stain your own frame pieces.  In this case, you may choose to purchase all “unfinished” yurt components and do all the sanding and staining yourself.  Another option is making certain yurt components yourself, and having us make other yurt components.  The instructions for building all yurt parts are available in our Complete Yurt Building Manual.

Below is a table that prices all parts individually.  In order to find your total estimated cost, select your individual yurt components and add them all together on your personal calculator.  Your total should reflect an estimate.   Please contact us if you have any questions.

Features

Benefits

Standard wall height is approximately 7’

Higher walls make your yurt feel roomier and allow for regular sized doors and windows

Rafters and khanna made from clear southern yellow pine

Our frame is made from a local wood, making it sustainable for people on the east coast and in the southern region

Rafters, khanna, and center ring treated with a natural water protectant finish

The wood frame is preserved and protected from mold; we are using natural materials purchased locally (see our link for Earthpaint)

Assembled with carriage bolts and lock nuts.

Replacement parts can be purchased conveniently at your local hardware store

Compression ring (center ring) is made with stain grade plywood, microlaminated boards

All materials used are natural and safe for interior living spaces (no harsh chemicals used, like those found in pressure treated wood)

All 20’, 24’ and 30’ yurts have reinforcing steel ring

The steel ring makes the yurt even stronger and makes it much more resistant to harsh weather conditions (like hurricanes and other storms)

We offer more windows in our yurt covers: our starting from 3 in our 12’ 4 in our 15’, 5 in our 18’, 6 in our 20’, 7 in our 24’ and 8 in our 30’ yurt

Natural light connects you with your environment and allows for easy ventilation and fresh air to flow through

Large windows (39x 47) made of a clear fire resistant vinyl, come with sewn in screen, and open from the outside

Large windows allow you to see your surroundings and observe the natural world you are surrounded by.

We offer a natural marine duck cotton canvas that is 13 oz and is available in five naturally died colors, natural, suntan, driftwood, khaki; and pearl gray.

Natural fabrics are breathable and better for the earth.  This fabric is ideal for people who have chemical sensitivities

We also offer a poly-cotton blend that has a vinyl coating and meets the highest standards for fire retardancy.  This fabric can be painted with exterior acrylic paints and should be seam sealed before being used; it comes in three colors, natural, suntan, pearl gray.

The poly-cotton fabric meets the standards for fire retardancy anywhere in the country.  Painting the cover allows you to choose your colors and helps preserve your cover for years to come.

We are willing to sew roofs and walls using other fabrics of your choice.

If we don’t stock a fabric you want, we are happy to accommodate your choices.

You are supporting a small business! Hal and Asia and their daughter Emilia are working together with a team of talented locals to bring you a beautiful yurt home.

Laurel Nest Yurts Fabric options

Natural fabric options

  • Our natural marine duck cotton canvas that is 13 oz and is available in five naturally died colors, natural, suntan, driftwood, khaki; and pearl gray.

  • We offer a variety of natural colors in our canvas material.

  • This material is waterproof as a result of its high thread count and will last between 3 and 5 years.

  • It can be painted to increase its lifetime.

Higher Fire retardant ratings

  • We also offer a poly-cotton blend that has a vinyl coating and meets the highest standards for fire retardant (required in some states). This fabric can be painted with exterior acrylic paints and acrylic insulating paints to give them long lasting protection and eliminate the need for seam-sealing.Painting the fabric gives you virtually unlimited color choices, though you may choose to seam seal the fabric and leave it in its standard colors, natural, suntan, pearl gray.

  • Above are the colors that the poly-cotton blend comes in. This fabric is easy to paint, and we recommend painting the roof.

Customized fabric choices

We are willing to sew roofs and walls using other fabrics of your choice.

We prefer to offer offer natural fabrics, however in certain situations the cotton canvas may not meet the needs of environmental settings or local laws and codes concerning fire safety.

The fabrics we usually use are the best options for cost efficiency but we are happy to help you find another fabric that is right for you.

The prices on the website reflect the cost of the fabrics we generally use.

Additional/ alternative windows for your yurt

All of our yurts come with several windows, but we are happy to sew in additional windows, to help you see the beautiful views or to add more functionality to your space.

  • A yurt with windows all around can be used as a screened in porch and can be set up and attached to an existing deck.

We also offer framed in glass windows, that are double pane low e glass.

  • These windows are helpful when a your yurt is set up on a deck that is high off the ground as they can be opened from the inside.

  • These windows also offer a non-vinyl option to those seeking out natural, non-petroleum based materials for their yurt.

Insulation Options

Insulated Window Covers

These covers are made of reflective insulation with a fabric liner facing to match the interior insulation of your roof and sides.

  • These will cover your windows during the coldest times of the year and are easy to attach and remove.

  • In the cold winter months, insulating some windows may help you conserve energy.

Reflective Insulation

Our insulation is a double bubble reflective foil and it works by reflecting radiant heat in both directions, keeping the yurt warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

  • This insulation reflects 96% of the radiant energy that strikes its surface.  It acts as a vapor barrier, and is available in two options.

  • The first insulation option has a foil on one side and a white poly on the other side which does not require an interior liner. The other insulation has foil on both sides, and is more resistant to fire and offers more insulating value, not to mention it can make your yurt look like a spaceship J.

  • For the second insulation option, we recommend covering the roof and wall insulation with an attractive interior liner.

Therma-shield Insulation

Painting the cover of your yurt is an alternative, natural way to insulate your yurt.

  • The paint will seal your canvas, thereby making it last longer.

  • You can paint your yurt any color

Interior Fabric Liners

Liner fabrics come in many styles, colors, and price ranges.  Our standard liner is a fire-resistant, cream colored, synthetic fabric.

  • We are happy to sew liners with more natural materials if the local laws and codes permit.

  • We also will be happy to help you sew a liner with a fabric of your choice.

  • Patterned liners that need to be matched at the seam will incur additional charges.

Door Options

Purchasing a pre-hung door locally

Many people choose to buy their doors locally.

  • With this option the customer can purchase locally and attach the door modification pieces, thus saving on shipping.

  • Some people prefer to have the completed door shipped pre-assembled and ready to use.

Purchasing our doorframe, buying a used door locally

We offer a handmade yellow pine stained doorframe.

  • You may choose to find and purchase a used door, or buy a new door (that is not pre-hung).

  • The door frame can be shipped un-assembled to save on shipping costs, and the customer is responsible for assembling, installing hardware and sealing the door.

  • You may also choose for us to send you the door frame assembled, the door pre-hung and ready to set up.

We prefer to use a low E (double pane insulated) glass door.  This option gives you additional light.  Some doors come with blinds between the glass and allow for privacy.  We love the extra light, beautiful views, and added warmth when installed on a south-facing side. Add an additional door for front and side entrances, access to decks, gardens, or additional yurts. Ask about placement options.

Door Screen Curtain

The Door Screen Curtain is made from 20×30 fiberglass no-se-um screen and attaches to the top inside of the door frame and is weighted at the bottom. Keep those bugs out! And let more air in.

Water Catchment

Our water catchment system, engineered for conserving rainwater, is a fabric gutter that collects run-off from the roof, funneling it through downspouts into your storage tank. The Gutter System prevents water from running down the wall, and helps your side cover last longer.

Banner System

Ask about hand-painted banners, done with acrylic paint and can come in a size of your choice.   We recommend this banner for our festival yurt, to make your yurt stand out and provide information about your business.

Snow and Wind Kit

We believe that the snow and windload kit adds valued protection, with minimal cost and is reccommended on all yurts over 18’. (All our 24’ and 30’ yurts come with a wind/ snowload kit.)

  • These kits are fairly easy for the customer to make and install, and can be added at any time.

  • We are happy to make and send these kits or to provide information to you on how to do-it-yourself.

  • The vertical supports pieces that attach the rafter to the platform can also be used to create a space for rigid foam or fiberglass insulation (very useful if you are trying to meet r-value requirements for inspection).

Skylight Dome

Our yurts all come with an opening skylight dome.  They can be tinted, and have custom features or sizes.

I want a yurt, now what?

Once you have settled on a yurt, you have a few things to consider.

  • First off, you need to decide what size yurt you wish to purchase.  Some people choose to buy two smaller yurts instead of one large yurt (i.e. instead of a 30′ yurt, they will go with a 24′ yurt and a 12′ yurt).

  • Once you have settled on a size, you need to decide if you want a complete yurt package or if you would like to make parts of it yourself.

  • Next, you need to choose the fabric you want your cover to be.  Your choices include a natural canvas, a poly-cotton blend or a material you supply.

  • As you begin to picture your new shelter, decide on how many doors and windows you want.  Will you have fabric windows or framed in glass windows?

  • Research your local building codes to find out if there are any restrictions or guidelines for getting started.

Contact us if you have any questions along the way.  We’re here to help!

We accept Paypal, check, and money orders for purchases.
